Last summer I helped my Dad refinish my Mom's wooden kitchen cabinets. It was part of a big remodelling job with the kitchen cabinets being the most time consuming job.
One evening, after stripping the old varnish from two cabinet doors, I accidentally left them outside over night. By the next evening, they had developed these terrible looking black spots. I panicked, naturally, and I tried every way I could think of to remove the spots. Nothing worked so I called a local hardware store to explain the problem. The man at the store said to try Savogran Wood Bleach.
Savogran Wood Bleach is a powdered mixture that contains oxalic acid. You need to mix it with hot water. The container says that the bleach lightens wood and is excellent for removing black water spots, tannin stains, and brightening decks.
To bleach wood, you can either mix the entire contents of the container with a gallon of hot water or a big tablespoon of the powder with a quart of hot water for smaller jobs. Apply it with a scrub brush every ten minutes until you see the desired results.
I used the Savogran Wood Bleach as directed and it worked perfectly. It removed the black spots completely and the cabinets turned out great.
It comes in a 12 oz. container and costs around $10. Money well spent if you need an effective product to bleach wood or remove stains.
